On My Mind

What is on my mind?

Once in a while, I’ll reveal what’s on my mind!
You may not care at all, which is fine.
But then again, you did click on this button (“On My Mind”),
so it shows you are curious…

December 13, 2017
I will be travelling for part of December and January so please hold your questions and requests over to late January 2018. So sorry but I need a break!

The topic of sphericity [ε] (the equality of variances of the differences between treatment levels in Repeated Measures ANOVA) has always intrigued me. Read more in my latest post about the data assumptions for sphericity, as well as an interesting article by Prof. Andy Field.

Just thinking – how often is the confounding variable problem being overlooked. Remember – X and Y may be correlated but not because there is a relationship (even a causal) between them, but possibly because both variables depend on a third variable Z (the confounding factor – not to be confused with the “effect modification”). So be careful with interpreting your Structural Equations Models (SEM).

Just amazing how a great strategy and sound decision making depends on an in-depth understanding of the consumers. Sad sad that so many (so-called) marketers just have no clue!

And so we are coming to the end of 2015. What an incredible year it was.  I’ve done some good travels, published two magazines but not a single academic article – thought I reviewed many manuscripts for other scholars.  Thanks to everybody who appreciated my writings and my consulting! Next year is going to be better though I am planning a lot of travel which hopefully will include northwestern Africa, eastern Africa, Canada, Portugal, Spain, Andorra, and maybe even the Caribbean. Deo Valente!  Next week I’m off to Myanmar (Burma).

Seems like everybody these days develop ‘n customer panel for their data collection. Most often their communication with panel members are so poor. Even the large research firms! Take this one example which really p***** me off: After a few demographic and product-use screening questions you just get the standard “sorry you don’t qualify” and boom, survey done. Such disrespect for their panel members!

I every so often lash out about boring marketing research surveys. As I monitor the practice of several research firms I still see mostly boring old research surveys. With so many new creative ways to collect data I’m amazed that so many firms still push out the 1980’s style surveys designs. Geeez wake up!

Talking about virtual shopping which involves the use of virtual store simulation – makes me wonder what is happening in Second Life these days. I have not hung around there in many months. I always thought it had huge potential for marketing research but somehow had difficulty to sell that to clients and so I lost interest and moved on. Worth exploring it again!

Years ago we did live audience response data collection with TV ad testing which included big investments in hardware. Nowadays with eveybody having their own smart device (phone), the cost of doing this type of data collection is getting so much cheaper. Just bring your phone with the downloaded app and the survey is done in a controlled environment. So much better to get reliable data collection.

Biometric research methods that measure a subject’s physical response to stimuli is a great topic for debate. These include heart rate and respiration monitoring, skin and muscle activity, brain activity and eye tracking which are getting a lot of attention these days.

Everytime I walk around one of the many supermarkets where I live in Hong Kong I’m just amazed about how slow they are to adopt some of the creative digital technology available to assist shoppers with their shopping not only to offer us shoppers a more exciting shopping experience but to also collect accurate shopping data linked to social-media & demographic data. When will they wake up?!  Still, they only ask me upon checkout “Octopussy card to scan?” (you have to register then scan your digital wallet [the Octopus card] with demographics then the shop gives you a few points. So archaic! Don’t these companies have any competent marketing research people employed? Still relying on the $Nielsen$ data?!

Ok, I decided to cancel my Iraq & Kuwait trip due to the ISIS war. Seems like Genghis Kahn and Alexander the Great are on the loose in Iraq. So now I’m going to hike the Pakistan Himalayas in the far northern Gilgit-Baltistan territory. Wish me a safe trip.
